As we enter 2013 and begin to move towards the trade deadline, rumors will begin to heat up all across the league. We’ve already heard some involving Lakers forward Pau Gasol and Kings young star DeMarcus Cousins, but those are just two teams. Who are the best players on every team’s trade block, and what should that team be looking for?
Player they should be shopping: Trevor Ariza
The Wizards are in a tough position right now. They currently have the worst record in the league and even with a big trade, will not be making the playoffs this year. The Wizards could use a lot of new faces on the team, but moving an unwanted Trevor Ariza would be a good start.
What they should be looking for: Young bench players
(DeJuan Blair, Reggie Jackson, Austin Rivers)
Oklahoma City Thunder:
Players they should be shopping: Reggie Jackson, Perry Jones, Kendrick Perkins
The Thunder could stay put involving trades this season and still be contenders, or they could take a risk and increase their chances of bringing home their first title. The Thunder could really use a better center and with the young players they aren’t using like Reggie Jackson and Perry Jones, they could probably get it.
What they should be looking for: Veteran Center that can score and rebound
Player they should be shopping: Anderson Varejo
Anderson Varejo has really caught the attention of other teams and is having a breakout season averaging 14 points per game and 14 rebounds. While he is older and does not fit in the Cavaliers future plans, he could really help out a contending team. Varejo would be a perfect fit for teams like the Thunder, Celtics, or Heat.
What they should be looking for: Picks and cap space
San Antonio Spurs:
Players they should be shopping: DeJuan Blair, Manu Ginobili
It may be surprising to see Ginobili on this list, but I believe the Spurs could get a little younger and even better if they would move him. Still, I would be very surprised if they did move Manu. DeJuan Blair is a talented player but is not seeing much time, the Spurs could something a little valuable for him.
What they should be looking for: Young Power Forward with good potential
(Derrick Williams,Patrick Patterson,Ed Davis)
New Orleans Hornets:
Players they should be shopping: Austin Rivers
This may be another surprising one, but truth is, Austin Rivers has not lived up to expectations so far. He may have hurt the Hornets more than helped them this year so far with awful shooting at 34 percent. They should look to trade him while he still has some valuable to him. It is risky though, he could still become a very good player someday.
What they should be looking for: Point guard preparing to enter prime
(Devin Harris,Rodney Stuckey)
Los Angeles Clippers:
Players they should be shopping: Trey Thompkins, Matt Barnes
These two players may not get them necessarily much, but they are two guys that could benefit from a trade. Trey Thompkins is a young player with some potential, but has received almost no playing time in LA. Matt Barnes is having a good season, but the Clippers are log jammed with older players at SF with Caron Butler, Matt Barnes, and Grant Hill. Maybe they could move one or two of them for a younger small forward.
What they should be looking for: Young Small Forward to take future starting job
Players they should be shopping: Gerald Henderson, Tyrus Thomas, Byron Mullens
The Bobcats need to leave the recent terrible past and get with the now and the new. They could do this by getting rid of some dead weights on the team, Gerald Henderson and Tyrus Thomas. Henderson still has a little value, but Tyrus Thomas is a bad contract they would like to get rid of. Byron Mullens has been playing good recently and with Bismack Biyombo behind him, they can afford to trade him.
What they should be looking for: Young big man with star capabilities
(Derrick Favors, Derrick Williams, DeMarcus Cousins)
Player they should be shopping: Norris Cole
In Norris Cole’s rookie season, he was pretty impressive, for the first half. Then he was struggling to find the court, and still is. The young guard has proved he could play, but will not get to play on the defending champions. The Heat are one of the worst rebounding teams in the league and are in need of a big man to help. Norris Cole could help bring them one to push them to their second straight championship.
What they should be looking for: Veteran big man that can rebound
(Samuel Dalembert,Kendrick Perkins)
Players they should be shopping: Rodney Stuckey, Tayshaun Prince
Rodney Stuckey has admitted that he would like to leave Detroit, so why hang on to a guy that does not want to be with your team? Tayshaun Prince has been great for the franchise for years, but it is time to move on and build around this young team. The Pistons could get some good players for these guys.
What they should be looking for: Young Shooting Guard or Small Forward that can score
(Thaddeus Young, Rodrigue Beaubois)
Player they should be shopping: Darell Arthur
After a good season playing on the bench last year, Darell Arthur’s play has dipped a good amount. A once sixth man of the year contender, is no longer even a sixth man. He is still young and there may be some bad teams out there that may want to see what he can do in a starter’s role. The Grizz are having a great season so far, and really have no need to trade anybody outside of Arthur.
What they should be looking for: Veteran bench scorer
(Rodney Stuckey, Manu Ginobili, JJ Reddick)
Players they should be shopping: Marcin Gortat, Luis Scola
It is no secret that the Suns will probably not be making the playoffs this year. It is the time for them to start looking for young players that they can rebuild this franchise around. Marcin Gortat is a good player, but not necessarily one that will get you a franchise player. Package him with Luis Scola, and the Suns could get some young talent from a contending team.
What they should be looking for: Young Guards with good potential or young big men with good potential
(Derrick Favors, Derrick Williams, Austin Rivers)
Golden State Warriors:
Player they should be shopping: Andris Biedrins
It feels like Andris Biedrins has been on the Warriors forever. To Warrior fans, it feels like that loaded contract of his has lasted forever as well. It may be very hard to get rid of him, but it is something the Warriors must try to do. They could offer their pick or something else for a team that takes him. It would be a miracle in the Bay Area if that contract was gone.
What they should be looking for: Cap space
Players they should be shopping: Jimmer Fredette, DeMarcus Cousins
Sacramento is having their own version of a Dwightmare right now with the drama surrounding young star center, DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins is a top center in the league and has incredible potential but struggles with maturity problems. It is sad that the Kings finally get their franchise player, and he wants out after just a few years. Jimmer Fredette is a average player and they could get a little talent in return for him.
What they should be looking for: Young talented players and high draft picks
(Perry Jones, Derrick Williams, Bradley Beal)
New York Knicks:
Player they should be shopping: Amar’e Stoudemire
It has been a bumpy ride for all-star Amar’e Stoudemire in New York, and lately, it has been very rough. The Knicks have shopped Amar’e before and I expect them to do it again this season. With how the Knicks have been playing, it is almost like Stoudemire is a buzz kill to their success when he comes in. But sometimes, he just adds more excitement and wins.
What they should be looking for: Cap Space
Players they should be shopping: JJ Reddick, Jameer Nelson
JJ Reddick and Jameer Nelson have no reason whatsoever to be involved in the Orlando Magic rebuilding plans. They could really help out a contending team and free up some cap space in Orlando. Their contracts are not beautiful, but there are a few teams out there willing to suck it up to make their team’s better.
What they should be looking for: Cap Space
Players they should be shopping: Devin Harris, Josh Smith
Josh Smith has been involved in trade rumors with the Hawks for many years now, and this may be the year he is finally dealt. He is on the verge of his first all-star game and could be a good second option on a contending team. Devin Harris is an older player that does not really fit on a Hawks team that may be focused on getting younger.
What they should be looking for: Young Small Forward or Shooting Guard and picks
(Bradley Beal, Tyreke Evans)
Players they should be shopping: Jose Calderon, Andrea Bargnani
They Toronto Raptors have made it very obvious: they would like to get rid of Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon. They have pretty big contracts, but they are good players that could really help out any team. I would be shocked if they are still on the team after the trade deadline in February.
What they should be looking for: Young Point Guard or Young Power Forward
(Derrick Williams, Austin Rivers, Jimmer Fredette)
Player they should be shopping: Danny Granger
While Danny Granger has been out, Paul George has taken over the team and has shown that he has real capabilities to be the next star for Indiana. Why risk that disappearing when Granger comes back? Trading Granger would be the mark of a new era for Indiana and would set them off in the future. Still, they are 19-13 without their all-star. What will they be like with him?
What they should be looking for: Point Guard or Small Forward with star capabilities
(Josh Smith, Eric Bledsoe)
Player they should be shopping: Rodrigue Beaubois
It must be difficult for Rodrigue Beaubois to continue to stay on the bench. He has shown flashes of brilliance and has high potential. With this lack of playing time, he may be losing it. The Mavs could get some good talent in return for him. It may kick start his career getting playing time with a new team.
What they should be looking for: Young big men
(Ed Davis, Byron Mullens)
Players they should be shopping: Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer
These two players have really helped the Bulls out this season without Derrick Rose. Even with that, I think the Bulls should try to trade them and get rid of some big contracts. Chicago should be putting young players around Rose and there is no better time to start fresh than this season. They could get some pretty good young guys in return.
What they should be looking for: Young Shooting Guard, Small Forward, or Power Forward with star capabilities
(Derrick Favors, DeMarcus Cousins, MarShon Brooks)
Players they should be shopping: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce
It may be finally time to get rid of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. I know last season they came back from a rough start, but I just do not see it happening again this season. They should take the opportunity to get young talent in return to give Rondo a chance to make his own run in the future. Even by losing KG and The Truth, they still could make a playoff run with the talent still on the team.
What they should be looking for: Young big men with star capabilities and picks
(Derrick Favors, DeMarcus Cousins, Josh Smith)
Players they should be shopping: Patrick Patterson, Greg Smith
The Rockets made headlines this off-season trading for star guard, James Harden. They are a young team that is already in the playoff hunt. They could even improve if they traded one of their power forwards that are stuck in that log jam of big men. They are loaded with young talent at forward and really should take advantage of it to get a good bench shooter.
What they should be looking for: Veteran sixth man
(Manu Ginobili, Devin Harris, Rodney Stuckey)
Player they should be shopping: Thaddeus Young
Thaddeus Young has played great this season for the Sixers. It is tough to say who the Sixers should be shopping when we have not even seen how they play with Bynum, but if I had to choose, I believe the 76ers should shop Thad Young around a little. Young is a bit of a tweener and the Sixers really need a big power forward that can grab some boards and play some lockdown defense. I am sure the 76ers could get that in return for Young.
What they should be looking for: Power Forward that can rebound and defend
Players they should be shopping: Anthony Randolph, Kosta Koufos
I am really surprised that we are this far into the season, and Javale McGee is still not starting yet. The Nuggets should be shopping Kosta Koufos and get ready to hand that starting spot over to McGee. Koufos is still young and there must be a few teams out there that have interest in him. Anthony Randolph put up solid numbers in Minnesota, but is having trouble finding time in Denver.
What they should be looking for: Shooting Guard that can score off the bench
(Marcus Thorton, Rodrigue Beaubois)
Los Angeles Lakers:
Player they should be shopping: Pau Gasol
There has not been a player that has received more hate and has had more rumors than Pau Gasol. Does he deserve it? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, it is more than obvious that he is on the trade block and if the Lakers do not pick their game up, I believe he will be traded. Will Mitch Kupchak pull of another great trade for LA?
What they should be looking for: Young Power Forward that can defend and score
Player they should be shopping: Ersan Illasovya, Samuel Dalembert
Ersan Illasovya has not topped his impressive season last year. In fact, he has not even got close. The Bucks should look to trade him and his sudden bloated contract before it is too late. Samuel Dalembert was a nice pickup, but the Bucks should move him to allow more time for their young big men, John Henson and Larry Sanders, to develop.
What they should be looking for: Small Forward entering prime or capable of starting
(Thaddeus Young, Josh Smith, Tayshaun Prince)
Player they should be shopping: Enes Kanter, Paul Millsap
With Paul Millsap’s contract expiring at the end of this season, the Jazz should seriously shop the big man. With young Derrick Favors right behind him, I find it hard to believe the Jazz will want him back and that Millsap will want to come back. They need to get something for him while they can. Kanter is a good player but needs to grow, but he just will not behind Al Jefferson.
What they should be looking for: Young Guard with star capabilities
(Tyreke Evans, Klay Thompson)
Player they should be shopping: Derrick Williams
Derrick Williams was the number two pick in the 2011 draft, but has not had the opportunity to play like it. It has been a combination of not getting enough time, but Williams not living up to the hype as well. It would be best for both sides if Derrick Williams was traded. A lot of teams really like the forward from Arizona, so the Timberwolves could get some good talent in return.
What they should be looking for: Young shooting guard that can score
(Rodney Stuckey, Rodrigue Beaubois, MarShon Brooks)
Player they should be shopping: MarShon Brooks, Gerald Wallace
MarShon Brooks had a great start to his career in Brooklyn when he almost won rookie of the year. With a new and improved Nets team, he has received little time. It would be best for Brooks and the Nets if he was traded. The Nets could get somebody valuable in return. Gerald Wallace is not the problem to the Net’s struggles lately, but I believe the Nets could get an all-star in return if Marshon Brooks and Gerald Wallace were traded together.
What they should be looking for: Another all-star player
(Danny Granger, Amar’e Stoudemire, Pau Gasol)
Players they should be shopping: Nolan Smith, Luke Babbitt
Nolan Smith and Luke Babbitt have not been the best players for the Blazers and they will not get a lot in return for them. I believe there are a few teams out there that will take a chance on these guys though. Babbitt came into the league with high potential but never got the time to develop. The Blazers could package these guys for a good player that has a bad salary.
What they should be looking for: Veteran Small Forward to come off the bench
(Metta World Peace, Grant Hill, Tayshaun Prince)
