Cleveland Cavaliers Eyeing Luol Deng Trade?

Cleveland, OH - According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers are considering making a push to acquire Luol Deng from the Chicago Bulls. They want to make a trade to upgrade their team, and rumors are beginning to swirl that they might choose to make that upgrade at small forward. Rumors have been swirling that Cleveland could try to acquire Omer Asik from the Rockets, but Luol Deng appears to be working his way towards the top of their wish list.

Through 17 games with the Bulls this season, Luol Deng has averaged 19.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Those numbers would be a huge boost for a Cavaliers team that was expected to compete in the Eastern Conference. They have certainly struggled, but still have the talent to make a push in a weak conference. Adding Deng’s ability to score, defend, rebound, and make plays for his teammates would be a huge move for the Cavs.

CavsDengRumorHN1There are no reports as to what the Cavaliers would have to give in return for Deng at this time. It is quite possible that the Bulls would accept a deal revolving around shooting guard Dion Waiters, but that is certainly not something that has been confirmed. Other pieces that could move are Anderson Varejao, Tristan Thompson, Alonzo Gee, and Anthony Bennett.

Chicago is more than willing to trade Deng for the right price. He will be a free agent this coming offseason and is wanting to explore his options. The Cavaliers believe that they could convince Deng to stay if they were able to acquire him from the Bulls.

Overall, this trade is something that could very well pick up speed in the next week or two. The Bulls are beginning to need depth with all the injuries that they have had, and a trade with the Cavaliers could bring in a few very solid role players. Dion Waiters makes the most sense in return to fill the long-term shooting guard role. There is certainly nothing imminent between these two teams, but discussions have been had.
