Phil Jackson was prepared to return to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday morning if negotiations between his agent and the team went well, a league source told ESPNLosAngeles.com late Sunday night.
When the Lakers called to tell Jackson that they had instead chosen Mike D'Antoni to be their next head coach, he was "stunned," according to the source, because he had been under the impression "it was his job to turn down," although no formal offer had ever been made.
Sources over the weekend said Jackson had made significant contract demands, including salary, personnel decisions and the ability to skip some road games, but ESPN NBA analyst Kurt Rambis -- who has since spoken to Jackson; the two are close friends -- said that was never the case.

Rambis, a former Lakers player and assistant coach who worked on Jackson-led staffs from 2001-2004 and 2005-2009 and remains close friends with Jackson, said Jackson told him there had never been any discussions of salary or restrictions on a potential return, and that he and the Lakers had agreed to wait until Monday to negotiate.
"It's a process with Phil," Rambis said Monday. "He goes through an entire mental process of envisioning the season and how to get the team to the NBA Finals. It's about winning for him, not just whether he wants to coach."
Instead, the Lakers went with D'Antoni, believing he was a better fit for their current roster, sources told ESPN.
Jackson's triangle offense was seen as a benefit to Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol but not as conducive to the rest of the players on the roster -- namely point guard Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard.
Another strike against the triangle was that this Lakers team struggled mightily picking up the similarly complicated Princeton-style offense being instituted by former coach Mike Brown, who was fired Friday.

Lakers spokesman John Black said team owner Jerry Buss, executive vice president Jim Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak were "unanimous that D'Antoni was the best coach for the team at this time."
They apparently reached that unanimous decision very quickly late Sunday night, as negotiations with D'Antoni did not begin until after the Lakers' win over the Sacramento Kings, sources said.
Before that, fans had been chanting for Jackson's return, and there had been quiet optimism among Laker insiders that it was just a matter of time before Jackson was back on the sideline.
Jackson's agent was even scheduled to fly to Los Angeles on Monday to begin negotiating a deal, a source said.
Mike and Mike in the Morning
ESPN NBA Insider Chris Broussard comments on how the Lakers reached the decision to hire Mike D'Antoni over Phil Jackson and more.

Jackson and the Lakers had never spoken about a salary, the source said, "but he knew coaches don't make what he used to make anymore." He also never intended to miss any more road games than he had in his previous stints with the Lakers.
"Phil would come back only to win, and skipping games doesn't lead to winning," the source said.
However, Jackson had wanted more say over basketball decisions, another source said.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Jackson also was seeking an ownership stake, according to a person familiar with the situation.
In the end, the Lakers felt D'Antoni gave them a better chance to win this season

i would love to have phill back but..he wouldnt even used nash we won championships with fisher as our pg..nd plus he wants to coach homes games and not many road games? i gusse phill was asking for to much this time and he got [expletive deleted] over

Phil is such a good coach that he can involve Nash in any offense. Believe me. If it is Princeton or Triangle offense he would involve Nash and make him a big part of the game. Why? Because Nash is one of the best point guards PJ has every coached.

He never said any of those things, they never even negotiated. His agent was on the plane to talk to the Lakers front office and they contacted him on the plane, on the way over to LA, and told him about the D'Antoni hired. They didn't even talk.

They debunked all of those rumors on ESPN. Coach Jackson never asked for any of those things.

Stupid, stupid hire. The Lakers will regret choosing Pringles over the greatest coach in NBA history, such an idiotic front office decision.

Sure it would've been great to have Phil but why are people saying Dantoni is a bad hire? He had the Suns as the best in the west for a few seasons with Nah + Amar'e.. now he has Nash + Dwight and Kobe + Pau is better than the rust of the Suns. Defense shouldn't be a problem either. When has Dantoni coached a team with defenders like Dwight, MWP, and Kobe? IJS

Have two head coaches for a team ever been fired in a single season?

Stupidest hiring ever. You have arguably the best coach ever in the NBA with 11 championships and you hire someone who has never played in a championship. Besides the Lakers aren't a fastbreaking team, Dantoni's philosophy is to get out and run.

Pau Gasol is a HoFer. The NBA HoF isn't very strict. Ralph Sampson made it and he wasn't as good as Pau is now, Pau is a very underrated and underappreciated player. Just based on his contributions as a great international player he'll make it. Pau played a big role on two NBA Championship teams, and is a 4x All-Star. He holds career averages of 19 points and 9 rebounds and is one of the greatest passing big men. If Howard continues his strong play he will make it, hell he'll probably make it even if he declines.

Pau will get in. He has two championships, which he played a key role in, carried the Grizzlies franchise through the early years, and has made plenty of contributions internationally.

Nah, Sampson was better than Pau at his peak. Thing is though that Pau has a better case over Sampson due to longetivity.

Jackson was asking for a lot from what I heard. Not only did he want a high salary, but he also wanted restrictions for road games, and control over basketball operations. If this wasn't true I don't think ESPN wouldn't report it, and the Lakers would have hired him. I know Phil is great but the sense of entitlement is ridiculous.
