I feel like if they can sign Kenyon Martin and possibly trade for a better SF they can be a very good team. Without Johnson it is allowing Smith and Horford to operate more freely offensively, and there isn't a guy Smith clashes with now for touches. Horford has also been great, he is playing like a top 3 center so far. The problem is they are a small team. Look at their starting lineup Teague-Harris-Stevenson-Smith-Horford. There is no way Devin Harris should be a starting shooting guard, he should be coming off the bench backing up Teague. Then they have one big man off the bench in Zaza. He is a good player, but they need more size to back up Smith and Horford. IF they add another serviceable big, and another decent SF they can possibly go on a deeper playoff run. Just my thoughts.

They sure are playing like it

They can be a top 5 seed if they continue playing like this.

I think that letting go of Johnson was the right move for the team. Smith and Horford are really playing well right now and their offense is fluctuating. If they add more depth down low, they could definitely be a threat in the East, but I stil don't see them getting anything above the fifth seed for the next few years.

The Atlanta Hawks have been one of the hottest team in the East and entire league. They've been playing great basketball and have been surprising a lot of us. When Joe Johnson left, I knew it would be a good thing for Josh and Al but I never knew the Hawks would be playing that well. I still think they will not do so well in the playoffs... I don't see them contending... they seem more like pretenders than contenders to me but we never know... I don't feel like they'd stand a chance in a playoff series against the Heat, Celtics, Knicks or even Bulls (if Rose comes back and stays healthy)

Well, Atlanta has proven me wrong. I thought for sure they would be a lottery team. But they are a good team with good shooters. Thing is though that like you said they're too small. Also is that they rely too much on their three point shooting. Their shooters like Morrow Stevenson and Korver can go cold from the three point line and that's what will make them lose in the playoffs.

Lets say they get Miami in round 2 if they make it there. They would most likely have Harris on Chalmers, Stevenson on Wade, Smith on LeBron, Horford on Bosh, then [expletive deleted] Teague on Battier. Either way, Harris/Teague is going to get raped. They should have signed Mickael Pietrus before the Raptors did.

No. They'll be out the playoffs in the 2nd round.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if they beat the Celtics, Knicks, or Nets in the playoffs.

This. Agreed with everything.

To add something of my own: Only time will tell but I don't think they're good anough neither they have a consistent go to guy to do something good this season.
They're definitely rolling right now though.

Yeah, their team is put together kind of oddly in my opinion. They have a lot of guards (Teague, Harris, Williams, Korver, Stevenson, Morrow, and a couple others), but not as many guys down low. I guess it's not uncommon, but also the players that they have are kind of just average. Teague is overlooked for sure. J-Smoove has been good this season, but I don't see him being a very consistent player in general. I feel like he's a little too relied on in Atlanta. He would thrive in a place like Boston or LA. As for Horford, he always seems to be there, but can't really provide the offense to put them over the top. Johnson was the man there that did just that, and although they have to say goodbye to that, it was the right move. They'll still win games and no doubt they're rolling right now, but they're not elite.
