NBA unveils East-West competition for all-star weekend

The NBA announced a change to All-Star Weekend on Thursday. The All-Star Saturday night exhibitions -- featuring the Shooting Stars competition no one watches, the Skills Challenge almost no one watches, the 3-Point Contest, which is still pretty relevant, and the Slam Dunk contest that everyone watches only to complain how they shouldn't have the event anymore -- will now be an Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference battle. From the NBA:

For the first time, State Farm All-Star Saturday Night will feature a new format that pits the Eastern Conference against the Western Conference in a night of competition that will raise money for charity, the NBA and State Farm announced Thursday.

As part of the new format, points earned by each conference throughout the four All-Star Skills Competitions will determine the conference that earns the title of 2013 State Farm All-Star Saturday Night Champion. Also, each conference will have an All-Star Saturday Night captain who will lead his team during the event.

In addition, NBA Cares and State Farm will make a joint donation of $500,000 as part of the event, with $350,000 going to the winning conference's charities and $150,000 to the runner-up conference's charities. All of the charities will be selected by the conference captains, the NBA, and State Farm. The State Farm All-Star Saturday Night captains and the charities receiving donations will be selected and announced at a later date.

So that adds a little bit to the competitons, which is nice. It's not enough to spur the guys to go all-out, but a little incentive is always good. It remains perplexing why the NBA has conferences at all, especially for the playoffs, which would be more entertaining and more competitive if the two conferences were mixed. But if they're going to have them, this is a good plan.

There's always a bit of light jawing between the two conferences and this should only ramp that up, which should be fun for the players.

Now if we can just get H-O-R-S-E brought back in a meaningful way ....

how do you guys not like this...

Winner = more charity money = Players try harder.

In other words, We get a better all-star game.

I'm not really sure what they're trying to get at here. It probably won't spark more interest or anything, but I'll have to see it to really know what to think of it.

Its not for the all-star game, it's for the events on Saturday night.

So I guess people play harder on the events lol

Eh it was a bit confusing at first, but I see now. My problem was mostly any chance of omitting stuff like the Skills Challenge and whatnot, because I actually like those events lol.

Yea they should.

Most NBA fans don't care about defense though, they just want to see Alley Oops and deep 3s. So All-Star game is perfect for most NBA fans (well enough that they don't care about changing)

They've been donating scholarships(or something like that) to the kid with the winner of the skills challenge for the past few years already

WTF. I didn't understand any of that.

Basically I think all the events on Saturday night will become East V West, and the winner conference gets a huge donation to a chairty of their choice. So I guess now people will give a crap about trying on the Saturday events

I see now, had to read it explained differently from a different site. That would make things a lot more interesting

21 guests [expletive deleted]. But I like it. If you don't well it's not really a big change. Plus it's for charity even better

Thanks for letting us know about this-

I once again can say, "I heard it here in The Nation 1st..."

I am all for charity and think that our league does the very best in this area-

I don't know what this will do in terms of the players, fans, competition and overall All-Star Weekend activities-

I love all of the All-Star stuff but I got to go when it was here in Denver so that probably has something to do with that...

I will have to see this in order to judge it-

Last year I didn't like the whole "team Chuck" v "team Shaq" in lue of the Rookies v the Sophmores... but then again I am not to crazy about change...

Then once I watched the actual school yard pick gig and the game- I kinda liked it and thought it was more competitive and "smart" than the usual format of the Rooks v Soph's...

So, I guess we will see...

:dribble:
