someone posted on the other nba forum i go to a lot and asked this question. I didn't have the answer as it's hard to find box scores from the higher paced, lower fg% days of the 60's and 70's.
what I did do was look up 1985 to present and you may be slightly surprised as who is #1 (and #2) in 20 pt/20 reb games during that era

looks like Charles Barkley has the most with 53 followed by Dwight Howard with 49 and then Shaq 48 20/20 games.

How accurate is this list? Cousins had a 31/20 game the other day but it isn't listed... dunno if there's any other omissions.

it's listed... you have to click on next page until you get the C's as it's listed alphabetically in reverse and it goes by last name. He has 2 career 20/20 games

Oh right, I listed it by "Date" and the most recent that came up was Zach Randolph on the 4th of December

Ah I get it, it only organises the people on that page. Disregard my issue ha

Here's a nice trivia game regarding the issue!

For the record, Wilt has the most in NBA history with 263 (including 70 such games in 1971)!

Wilt has the most followed by Russell. I'm sure guys from the 60's make up the top5 of this list maybe even top10 because in later eras getting 20 boards was much much tougher with the lower pace.

I'm sure post-merger that Moses is #1 over Barkley by the way.

EDIT: Moses from 82-83 season onwards has 32 of them. Kareem just in his 71-72 season where pace was far far lower than 60's has 15.

possibly, but there's no proof. BBall ref has the database only from 85 on and those are the results.
the pace isn't that different from 71/72 to 63/64 (less than 1ppg difference for the league average), but the FG%'s are thus the difference of 14 rpg from the two seasons. (65 rpg was the average in 63/64 and 51 being the average in 71/72). I do wonder if that is because of the larger sample size too going from 9 teams to 17.

Wilt and Russell spam this thread.

However, getting 20 boards is tougher from mid 70's to now.

I'm really surprised that Shaq had so many 20/20 games.. and that's a pleasant one.

BRef has Moses' points and rebounds for every regular season game in 82-83, 83-84, and 84-85. It's just not in the game finder.

The pace is very different from 71-72 and 63-64. Top rebounder Russell grabbed 24.7 rpg and league high was only ~18 rpg by Wilt in 71-72. Just from that it's a world of difference. League PPG was high as you said because of better field goal %. But pace in 71-72 was only about 10-15% higher than today.

don't really care about pace. I showed the difference in ppg, and the difference in rpg for a league average. The league average in shot attempts per game is only 3.5 (99 in 63/64 vs 95.5 in 71/72)
The game was only marginally faster in 63/64 but the lower FG% made more rebounds available... about 11 a game. There was still plenty of opportunities to grab 20 boards in the early 70's.

For reference, an average team in 11-12 grabbed 42.2 rpg.

Average team in 63-64 grabbed 65.9 rpg.
Average team in 71-72 grabbed 51.1 rpg.

It's a pretty bit difference between those two seasons IJS. A player grabbing 20 boards would need a TRB% of 15.2 in 63-64 but a TRB% of 19.6 in 71-72. In other words only elite rebounders could get it with any consistency in the latter.

From 60-63 pace was even faster and teams grabbed 70+ rpg.

You have a source?

Wilt did average 39/25+ for 7 years... he's probably #1 here as well.

Yeah Wilt's definitely number one. I wouldn't be surprised if he's followed by a guy like Elgin Baylor or Bill Russell.

Wilt and Pettit probably lead as Wilt's career numbers are 30.1ppg and 22.9rpg and Pettit had a 28 20 season in 60-61.
