Jose Calderon Wants Out

The temperature is getting lower in Toronto. As a result, everything is getting colder. The only thing that seems as cold now as it was in the fall is Canada’s sole NBA franchise.

The Toronto Raptors now stand at 4-18 on the season. They’ve lost their last 5 games and are allowing 103 points per game. Frankly, they look awful. Partly because of all this, the team is expected to move a player or two. The idea would presumably be to look towards the future while clearing cap room.

In the team’s latest development, it seems that Jose Calderon is the first certain send-off that the Raptors can expect:

Point guard Jose Calderon has made it clear that he would like to be traded, and Colangelo continues to explore the possibilities there as well. A Raptors trade of some significance, more than likely, is on the horizon.

There’s some shuffling to be expected here, that’s for sure. When the Raptors acquired guard Kyle Lowry from the Houston Rockets, they effectively put a clock on Calderon’s tenure in Canada. Lowry has struggled to stay healthy this year. In Toronto’s Monday game against Portland, Lowry went down again to injury.

With Lowry missing so much time, Calderon has been free to re-assume his role as the starting floor general for the Raptors. His numbers have held steadily with 9.6 ppg and 6.6 apg.┬áNonetheless, it seems that the Raptors guard really wants out of Toronto. To his favor, he’s an interesting piece for a number of teams.

The Sacramento Kings have a trio of guards who haven’t been very effective, Cousins could use a floor general. Though he’s recovering, Boston’s depth at back court took a hit when Avery Bradley went down with injury. The Orlando Magic could use the kind of ball distribution and experience Calderon provides. That was just rattling off a few possible locations. Calderon is a fitting puzzle piece for plenty of NBA teams right now, whether he’s starting or providing key production off the bench.

Colangelo’s contract is ending after this season and former first pick Andrea Bargnani has been hearing his name in trade rumors. It’s crunch time for the Raptors, with changes surely to be made. Hopefully, Toronto starts to make the right moves.
