Los Angles, CA - Doc Rivers and the Celtics squared off against the Lakers twice in the NBA Finals. In 2008, the Celtics beat the Lakers, and in 2010 Doc’s Celtics lost to the Lakers in a hard fought seven game series in the Finals. Rivers clearly does not want to be reminded of that.
The Clippers revealed their Staples Center redecoration during a preseason game Friday, which displays their star players on banners. Their intention is to block off the Lakers’ 16 championship banners and 10 retired uniforms during Clipper home games.
Steve Nash understands why the Clippers elected to do this. Nash said, “I guess if you were in the Clippers’ organization you probably want to do that, too,” Nash also said. “It’s their arena on their night, so I would try to make it feel like home.”
Doc was the one behind this, and perhaps the pain over 2010 lingers in his mind. I personally think Doc is trying win over the fans and his players by using images of his players to cover up the championship banners of the Lakers.
“Well, I didn’t look at it as the banner thing. I just look at it as putting our guys up. Listen, I think this is our arena when we play, so I just thought it would be good that we show our guys. No disrespect to them. But when we play, it’s the Clippers’ arena as far as I know.”
Doc’s point of view is understandable, and I do not blame him. However, this would not be allowed had it been a few years ago. The Clippers are the hot team right now, and the hype is there; therefore, they have the juice to do this.
Unlike Steve Nash, Nick Young believes Doc has too much pull right now with this being allowed. Young told ESPN:
“He can do that? For real? That’s disrespectful. We got to talk to Doc. He can’t have that. We got to do something about that. That’s a lot of pull y’all are giving Doc. I think he shouldn’t come in and have so much pull like that. He’s got to earn his keep. He didn’t win no title in LA. That’s where it’s at. Look at all these banners in here, you can’t shadow those up.”
However, Young is another Los Angeles star that needs to earn his keep as well. With Young and the Lakers hyped up, this only makes the Lakers/Clippers rivalry even more entertaining.
