The Dallas Mavericks played a very surprising season this past year, and Devin Harris was a huge piece for them down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs. Harris was a very nice change of pace backup point guard to Jose Calderon, and he was also a key offensive piece off the bench. According to Dwain Price of the Star-Telegram, the two sides are both interested in getting a deal this offseason that will allow Harris to return to Dallas next season.
“Obviously I don’t really know where [the negotiations] will go. My intent is to come back, but like I said, only time will tell. I would rather not [sign a one-year deal]. It’s kind of tough to do, especially coming off surgery.” – Devin Harris
There is no denying that Harris is one of the best quality backup point guards in the game when he’s healthy. He showed exactly what type of impact he can have on a game during the Mavericks’ playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, and was one of the better bench scorers and shooters off the bench. His production is certainly needed for Dallas, and it is likely that Mark Cuban will make sure to bring him back to town.
Harris played in 40 games off the bench with the Mavericks this past season, averaging 7.9 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game. He doesn’t score big numbers as far as points are concerned each and every game, but he’s more than capable of putting up 20 or more points on any given night. His ability to run an offense is very underrated as well, and his is a more than willing passer who knows how to get his teammates the basketball in good positions for them to succeed.
Overall, this offseason is going to be a very intriguing one for the Mavericks. They believe that they are close to competing for another championship, but they need some more supporting pieces for Dirk Nowitzki. Harris re-signing would be a very good start to the process of bringing in the necessary talent to surround Nowitzki and Monta Ellis.
