Toronto, CA - According to the National Post, the Toronto Raptors are considering trading small forward Rudy Gay. They acquired Gay from the Memphis Grizzlies last season before the trade deadline, but would like to get a package of young talent in return for him. The Raptors will likely wait to move Gay until closer to the trade deadline unless they are surprisingly in contention for a playoff spot.
There will be a lot of interest in Rudy Gay without a doubt, but it remains to be seen what kind of value it would take to acquire him. Gay had a solid season last year, averaging 18.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. At 27 years old, Gay still has a lot of good basketball left in him and teams could use a player with his skills. While Gay is a solid scorer, he is also known for being an exceptionally good defender as well.
The Raptors obviously covet the star from Canada that will likely be coming out in the 2014 NBA Draft, Andrew Wiggins. Trading Gay could very well be a part of “tanking” for the #1 overall pick. Toronto Raptors fans are absolutely sick of rebuilding, but they would be more than happy to sacrifice one more season in order to bring in Wiggins. That being said, Gay is a very valuable player that the Raptors could choose to hold on to as well.
Overall, this will be something to keep an eye on as the trade deadline draws closer this season. There will be teams that could use a player like Gay to make a postseason run that could be willing to overpay to make the Raptors decide to pull the trigger. It’s certainly a situation that the Raptors could cash in on.
