How are the rookies shaping up this season? Well, there have been some some surprises, but for the most part the top picks are doing exactly what they were expected to do.
When narrowing down the NBA picks for Rookie of the Year, there are two names that stick out above the rest.
Right now, the favorite for Rookie of the Year has to be Damian Lillard, who’s averaging 18.8 points, 6.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game for Portland so far this season. Lillard has translated his game to the NBA level with incredible ease and has already hit a game-winner as an added bonus too. This guy can really play and should only get better and better.
You’ve got to mention Anthony Davis too, despite injury holding him back. He’s averaging 14.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per contest and is putting up a nice 23.46 PER rating so far. Davis will be in the running at season’s end.
The next two favorites have to be Alexey Shved and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Shved has been an excellent pickup for Minnesota, as he’s averaged 10.2 points, 4.1 assists and 2.4 rebounds in just under 27 minutes per game. He’s certainly earned himself a bigger role. MKG meanwhile is improving each and every day, and is still making an impact despite being the youngest player in the entire league.
Further down, you’ve got the likes of Dion Waiters, Andre Drummond and Bradley Beal. Waiters and Beal have settled into starting roles, while Drummond is earning himself more playing time with his solid production as of late.
To close out the list, there’s Harrison Barnes, Kyle Singler and Andrew Nicholson. Barnes started out hot but has cooled off significantly, while Singler has been elevated into the starting lineup over Rodney Stuckey. As for Nicholson, like Drummond he has started to get more playing time because of his efficiency off the bench for Orlando.
