Washington Wizards Set to Acquire Marcin Gortat from Phoenix Suns

The Washington Wizards and Phoenix Suns have agreed to a trade that will send Marcin Gortat to the Washington Wizards. Washington will be acquiring Emeka Okafor and a 2014 first round pick from the Washington Wizards in return. In addition to Gortat, the Wizards will also be receiving Shannon Brown and Kendall Marshall in the trade.

Miami Heat v Phoenix SunsPhoenix is obviously stocking up on 2014 first round draft picks as they acquired on in the Luis Scola deal with the Pacers and now this one from Washington. The 2014 draft class is expected to be a very good one and could help the Suns out in a big way through their rebuilding process. Okafor has a player option on his contract for next season that he is expected to pick up.

The Wizards are gaining three quality players that are expected to fit in very nicely. Kendall Marshall is the most interesting piece in this deal, as he was considered to be one of the top point guards in last years draft. The Suns weren’t impressed with what they saw out of him, but there is no doubt that he still has quite a bit of potential. Shannon Brown is a high-flying scorer off the bench that will fill a need as well. Gortat is obviously the big piece of this deal, and it gives Washington a healthy center who’s a double-double machine.

Both teams are making out with deals that are good for them. Phoenix is making it obvious that they want to build themselves through the draft, while the Wizards are going to make a run at a playoff spot this year. Emeka Okafor is currently out indefinitely due to a neck injury which could be something that nags him all year. This is an excellent deal for both teams that will fill holes for Washington and help Phoenix acquire young talent.
